For many of the world's inhabitants, the horse is a working animal, crucial to their lives; for others, it is a treasured or prestigious hobby.

In this exhibition, the photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand portrays the horse and its importance for people the world over.

The 100 magnificent photographs are displayed in subdued lighting to allow their deep glow to be revealed in the best possible light. A shop sells books, posters and postcards.

The world premiere of Horses was opened by HRH The Crown Princess Mary of Denmark in Copenhagen in autumn 2004. It was a major success and was followed by a further exhibition in Kulturhuset in Stockholm in May the following year.

Toreo, eleven years old, trained by Mario Luraschi. Chez Mario Luraschi, France.
Whatever the name given to it – Andalusian, Jennet or any other – the Spanish horse is one of the great marvels of the equine species. Not overly large (1,50m to 1,60m) it has a curvaceous silhouette. Its agreeable disposition, as much towards its peers as to its riders, is legendary. Especially suited to the Haute École, it is highly prized by fans of brilliant riding and equestrian displays.

Flamenco, 7 years olds, belonging to Christine de Dorken. Paris Agricultural Fair, France.
Horses are sometimes selected entirely for their looks or simply their colour. This is the case, for example, with the appaloosa (spotted) or the palomino (blonde). The reason for it drawing back its upper lip here is to better savour the odours in the air around it. Often the stallions will adopt this same expression to see if the mare that they intend to cover is (or not) favourably disposed. This amatory grimace is called the flehmen.

Presented by its owner, Mr Enkhree and mounted by his seven year old son, Bat-Erdenne. Mongolia.
If it looks a bit like the cave paintings of horses done by prehistoric man, perhaps that's because its origins really do stretch back into the mists of time. The little Mongolian Horse (rarely taller than 1,30m -1,35m) doesn't look like much, but it is an extraordinary animal and an indefatigable mount. In the 13th Century Genghis Khan was able to construct the largest empire in history on the back of the Mongolian horse. Today it is still widely used in Mongolia, the only country in the world where there are more horses than people.

Dao de Courenne, twelve years old, from the Delgado stud farm, trained and presented by Frédéric Pignon and Magali Delgado, France. Essen Horse Fair, Germany.
The Portuguese horse deserves just as much praise as its Spanish cousin. Indeed both horses had the same name (Andalusian) for a long time. Officially baptized Purebred Lusitano in 1966, this horse became famous with the development of the equestrian academies and the flourishing of Haute École for which it shows special aptitude. Between the 16th and 18th centuries it was the darling of all the European Courts as they competed to procure the most beautiful horses. The Lusitano is still highly prized by equestrian show professionals today.

Ayacucho Coscorron, handled by its trainer, Martin Hardoy. La Rural, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
When he first set foot in the Americas at the end of the 15th century, Christopher Columbus could not find a single horse. As a result he decided to import them from Spain on his second expedition. On the 28th November 1493 he landed twenty horses on Hispaniola: the first ever to grace the New World. They found the new environment so much to their liking that they very quickly reproduced, proliferated and, with successive interbreeding, gave birth to a new, typically American Creole breed: the Criollo.

Bragadense Celosa, three years old, belonging to Ernesto J. Figueras and presented by Daniel Meaca. La Rural, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Horse breeding is sometimes like cooking up a fabulous meal. Here for example is a typically Argentine recipe: import Shetland and Welsh ponies from Great Britain. Mix well. Add a good splash of local Creole blood – the Criollo – to the mixture. And you end up with this marvellously lively playmate, an ideal mount for children and a real miniature sports horse - the Petiso.

Roba Al Shaqa and Enshoda Al Shaqab, one year olds, born at the Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, Emir of Qatar's stud farm, near Doha, Qatar.
Even those who are not particularly interested in horses agree that the Arab horse is a superb creature. The Arab truly is the finest horse in the world. But it is not only because of its anatomical perfection that it has been used for several centuries to improve European breeds; it is also for its qualities of energy, spirit and speed. Today the breed is made up of many different types of variable size (1,40m to 1,60m) determined by where they were bred, the tastes of their breeders and their eventual use, be it speed or endurance racing… or beauty contents.

Jerry du Goarem, six years old, mounted by Gilles Marnay. Haras du Pin, Normandy, France.
Immediately after the Second World War, the French decided to rationalise the breeding of horses, which were now competing in a mechanised world. In 1958, the decision was taken to merge into a single "breed" the multitude of saddle horses that each province, each specific locality, had created over the course of the previous centuries. The breed was christened the selle-français (SF). Due to its diverse origins there are a great many varieties of the SF - some more suited to the racetrack, others better adapted to competition (dressage or show jumping). Others are used for teaching or leisure.

This is no ordinary draught horse, no mere plough-puller: it is also a long-distance runner. Generally grey, of average size (around 1,60m) and graceful despite its bulk, the Boulonnais, was long used to transport “la marée", the fresh catch of fish from Boulogne to Paris, at an average speed of twenty kilometers an hour. In 1991 an endurance race called "The Fish Run" was instigated, retracing the itinerary and commemorating the service.

Icelandic Mare, Gylling, mounted by Tota (alias Thorunn Thora Rinsdòttir) and her son. Near Selfoss, Iceland.
The Icelandic horse can be proud of its origins: it was imported from the Scandinavian fjords by the Vikings in the 8th century. Less than two hundred years later a law forbade all new importation of horses onto the island in order to protect the genetic purity of the Icelander so as not to dilute its qualities: hardiness, stamina, comfort. The small Icelandic horse (1.38m on average) runs only at a trot or gallop; a quick step, the tölt, unique to this breed, offers the rider unequalled comfort.

Maremmano Stallion, Zorro, thirteen years old, presented by its owner, Miriano Manciati. Essen Horse Fair, Germany.
There are racing horses, war horses, working horses – and then there's the Maremmano, the all-purpose horse. Originally from Tuscany (Central Italy), it is used by the guardians of the herds, the butteri (Italian cowboys) as well as the army and the police. A sturdy animal of average size (about 1,55m), it can also be used for light draught and agricultural work – or just simply, as it is today, for equine tourism. Docile and intelligent, it is said it has in its veins, just like the Lipizzan, some drops of Neopolitan blood. Hence it's air of nobility.

World Premiere of Horses in Copenhagen, 2004
The first ever exhibition of Horses was opened in Copenhagen by HRH The Crown Princess Mary of Denmark on 28 September 2004. Also present were the Mayor of the Culture Department, Martin Geertsen, and the photographer himself, Yann Arthus-Bertrand.
The exhibition takes one of the world's most beautiful animals, the horse, as a focal point to take visitors on a photographic journey to the world's most distant cultures and civilisations.
The exhibiton's 100 photographs were on display in a large tent on Nytorv next to Strøget in Copenhagen from 29 September to 29 December 2004.
